Creation of space

They previously had no storage at all and product was stored on the ground in the yard area. Wickens designed a series of cantilever racks to store the varying lengths of aluminium components. “The new racks have created so much more space”, comments Yard Manager Bob Lynock, “we can't say how much more space it has given us because we had nothing before - it's a great improvement.”

Protection of delicate materials

Smart-space needed a storage system which could safely store their delicate roofing sheets. Much of Smart-space's components come from Coverworld (suppliers of roofing and cladding to the construction industry) who Wickens had previously supplied cantilever racking to. The experience of working with Coverworld meant that Wickens already understood the importance of protecting some of their more delicate products.

Organised site

In the past it had been difficult and time consuming to find components when they were required. With the racking now situated around the edge of the yard it is much more organised and the middle of the yard can be used for sorting orders. In addition the improved look of the site is important because Smart-space's customers visit. Bob has certainly noticed the improvement; “Before we couldn't even get the truck into the yard! The racking has definitely done what we hoped it would – it saves me a lot of time.”
